The tongue of the righteous is choice silver; the heart of the wicked is of little worth. Proverbs 10:20 The Bible frequently warns of the harm that the tongue can do, but in this verse we are shown how God values the power of the tongue. In this verse the small tongue of the righteous is compared to the entire heart of the wicked. It is not the size of the part or the function of the part that is valued by God, it is the spirit behind it. The tongue is obviously much smaller in size and complexity compared to the heart. The tongue is intricately laid with nerves and gives the gift of taste but the heart is an organ that pumps blood through every vein and cell in the body. The tongue has a purpose in life but it is the heart that truly functions as THE source that continues life. As a part of my sanctification in Christ, my tongue has been changed. It is no longer a part that curses God but a part that praises him. To think that my tongue alone is considered one of the most precious metals is baffling. To compare this to a heart that is the very essence of life and a deep room of the soul seems silly. Doing so, though, gives us a confidence of our worth in God’s eyes and a reassurance that Christ is working through every part of us. If God sees our tongues as a precious metal think how much more he sees and values our very souls! The wicked cannot live up to the worth of a precious tongue with their entire being. Their rebellious and unrepentant soul is not of use then to God. How can it be that a tiny tongue is more precious than the whole of a wicked heart? It is not we who can create such fine value, but Christ alone. It is possible because of Christ for it is Christ who takes a tongue that once cursed God to be a tongue that now praises and seeks God. How can the wicked ever measure up to my sanctified tongue? How can they compete? They cannot for it is Christ who is transforming me. It is He who transforms mere flesh into a most precious metal. A willing tongue is more precious than a wicked heart. Christ alone is the only cure for a wicked heart. Christ alone is the one who gives value to the tongue of the righteous and Christ alone will sanctify even the most evil heart so that every part of his saints might glorify him and revel in the riches of His mercy and joy. Your tongue is as precious as silver, your heart and soul are therefore even more precious to Christ. If he loves each part of you just as you are there is no need to fear any rejection. It is Christ who gives you worth, you cannot earn it. Rest in the riches of that and allow yourself to feel how precious you are to God. Jesus, Oh that even the tiny cells on our tongues would reflect your glory! God we pray first and foremost for the hearts of the wicked. We pray that you would begin to change them. We pray that your spirit would soften the deadened spirit and that your truth would set the wicked free. God we also pray that you would help us to live in freedom. God help us to bring you glory. Help us to rest in this verse and to realize that you do truly value us just as we are. It is because of you that we are sanctified and it is because of you that we have worth. Apart from you we are no better than the wicked, but because of you we are as beautiful and as precious as silver. Continue to sanctify us and continue to teach us how to glorify you with each and every cell in our bodies and more importantly in our souls. Amen. |
