What is your beloved more than another beloved, O most beautiful among women? What is your beloved more than another beloved, that you thus adjure us? Song of Solomon 5:9 The book Song of Solomon is a symbolic poem of the relationship between Christ and his church. It is similar to the relationship between a bridegroom and his bride. The story is one of a love that begins with an immature bride and ends with a truly fruitful, purposeful, and committed marriage. As the bride matures and as she begins to know her bridegroom, as she begins to celebrate his qualities her friends continue to ask her what it is about him. Her poetry is sweet as she begins to detail every fine quality in both his physique and his personhood. Still her friends ask, throughout the whole of the courtship, the friends are curious. In the same way that the bride must truly know her bridegroom in order to answer the friends’ queries, we must be prepared as the bride of Christ to answer anyone who might ask why it is that we love him so. We must truly know him before we can bring others to know him. Each question asked is an opportunity for us to witness to others. It is also another opportunity where we worship our bridegroom for all that he has and will do in our lives. It is an act that continues to solidify our bond. Without a continued maturity, the bride is unable to answer the friends. In the same way, we cannot answer others if we do not first truly know who Christ is and if we do not continue to work to know him. The question will be asked of you throughout your relationship with Christ why it is that you follow him. You must be prepared to answer what it is about him that is different than any other supposed savior. Ultimately, we will stand before God and have to answer to him who it is that we think he is. If you are unable to truly answer that question, why don’t you pause for a moment to think about it? Why don’t you pause for a moment and invite Christ in to show you who he truly is. Allow him to lead your heart into rapture as he reveals the many facets and wonderful truth of his godhood. Do so daily. He is like a song that brings both peace and joy. There is stillness in his faithfulness and a sensitivity beneath his strength and might. As a judge he is just, as a savior he is love. As a rock he is firm, as a friend he is soft. As a father he is protective, as a lover he is attentive. He is quick to act, yet wise and diligent. He is quick to rebuke, but faithful to rebuild. There are no limits to his character. In the same way that the bride journeys to know, to behold, to cherish, and to be one with her bridegroom, the goal of relationship with Christ mirrors that. Give pause and work to come to know him truly. It is then that you can have the answer in your own heart for why he is THE best choice and it is then that you can answer all who might ask. Bridegroom Jesus, It is strange to think that you could find us beautiful. It is even stranger to think that your love for us could be as beautiful as the love of a husband for a wife. As we daily pause and invite you to show us the fullness of your godhood, stir our souls. Create a hunger God that daily causes us to wait on you. Grant us the gift of joy as we come to know you. Reveal your beauty and your fullness Jesus. You are the part that makes us whole. It is only in you that we truly find love. Let our relationship be as beautiful as the poem in Song of Solomon. In your most precious name, Amen. |
