You show that you are a letter from Christ, the result of our ministry, written not with ink but with the Spirit of the living God, not on tablets of stone but on tablets of human hearts. 2 Corinthians 3:3
Christians are constantly told that they are the salt of the earth, the light of the world, the truest representation of Christ. We are advised to live our lives in a way worthy of the calling, to be a constant representation of Christ, and to remember we are always being held to a higher standard. Too often we are guilty of knowing our responsibility but not realizing how special that responsibility is. We forget that our responsibility is a reflection of what we have become because of Christ.
This verse tells us in a new way that in our lives we are a letter from Christ himself of love, peace, joy, patience, forgiveness, and justice to the world. While this may seem like another simple analogy of who we are to the world let the first part of the verse sink in. We are a letter from Christ. The Lord of all creation saw us and chose to write a story of redemption, hope, and love all over us. We who were crumpled, shriveled up, discarded and made to feel useless have had our lives smoothed out and made to be the perfect stationary of such a love. The importance of this letter analogy is that if we are truly a letter to the world from Christ it means he has signed his name all over our lives. We are not simply a letter by text in a big book but by the Spirit of the living God that is in that text - the bible. We are Christ's love letters to the world, evidence of his power and salvation. His letter hasn't been written with ink or on stone but with his spirit and on human hearts. Ink, paper, stone- all pass away but the penman of this letter to the world lives in our hearts and holds it so that this love letter will be sent out. We are not simply to be letter carriers who simply distribute biblical truths, we are to become those biblical truths and in all we do remember that Christ's name is written all over our lives. If you've ever tried been a part of match-making where you deliver a note from someone to another in an attempt to have them find love you feel a sense of joy, an excitement in surprise, and a usefulness. How much more you should feel knowing that Christ has written all over you and entrusted you to deliver this love to all in this lost world. The responsibility we have should not seem like a burden but should reaffirm how truly special we are that Christ chose us for such a wonderful task. Get excited about bringing love into the lives of those around you and hope for them to find the author of you, you special letter.
Dear Lord,
When we think of how you have written in our lives with a powerful spirit, we simply stand in awe. Help us never to forget how special we are because of this responsibility you have entrusted us with. Let us not disappoint but joyfully go forward and love others enough to share your light with them. We know our duty but help us never to think it simply a task required of us and let us always remember it is more than a task - it is our purpose that you have called us to do. Go before us and prepare the hearts to receive you. Thank you for writing your name all over our lives and send us out knowing how special and glorious this analogy makes our job. In your precious name Jesus, Amen. |
